Best portable power station for a home office, Wi-Fi and laptop in South Africa (2026)
We have not tested these units ourselves. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and South African retailer listings, and shows you how to work out what your own desk setup needs so you can keep working through an outage.
Quick answer
- Wi-Fi and a laptop on a small budget: EcoFlow RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS version) – 245 Wh, 300 W, LiFePO4, 3.55 kg, R5,399.
- A full workday for a laptop and router: EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max – 512 Wh, 500 W, LFP, R6,599.
- Laptop, monitor and router through long outages: EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro (768 Wh, 800 W) or Gizzu Hero Max (1024 Wh, 1000 W, built-in UPS).
Step 1: Add up what your desk actually uses
Look at the label on each power adapter. A laptop charger shows its maximum output (for example “65W”); routers and fibre ONTs show a volts and amps figure (watts = volts × amps, so 12 V × 1 A = 12 W). These are maximum ratings – real use is usually lower – so they give you a safe upper estimate. A plug-in energy meter gives you a real figure.
Total load = add the watts of everything you will run at once.
Example (your numbers will differ): 65 W laptop charger + 12 W router + 12 W ONT = 89 W.
Usable capacity ≈ rated Wh × 0.85 (inverter and conversion losses; Jackery uses this same 0.85 factor in its own runtime formula).
Runtime ≈ usable Wh ÷ total load
Example: a 512 Wh unit × 0.85 ≈ 435 Wh ÷ 89 W ≈ about 4.9 hours.
Two easy wins: charge the laptop from the power station's USB-C port instead of the laptop's own AC adapter where the laptop supports USB-C charging (it skips the inverter), and remember the laptop has its own battery, so the power station mainly has to cover the router, ONT and any monitor.
Step 2: UPS or EPS switch-over – does it matter?
If the power station stays plugged into the wall with your router connected, it switches to battery when the power cuts. The switch-over time matters for devices with no battery of their own. EcoFlow quotes <10 ms for the RIVER 3 UPS version (<20 ms for the standard RIVER 3) and <30 ms EPS for the RIVER 2 series; Gizzu quotes 10 ms on the Hero Max. A laptop does not care, and many routers will ride through a short gap, but a desktop PC may restart if the switch-over is too slow for its power supply – if that matters, pick a unit with the fastest quoted switch-over. Jackery SA says the Explorer 500 should not be used as a UPS.
Step 3: Compare the models
| Model | Capacity | AC output | Switch-over | Chemistry / cycles | Weight | Example runtime at 89 W* | Price (24 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS) | 245 Wh | 300 W (600 W surge) | <10 ms | LiFePO4, 3000 to 80% | 3.55 kg | ~2.3 h | R5,399 (EcoFlow ZA) |
| EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max | 512 Wh | 500 W (1000 W surge) | 30 ms | LFP, 3000 to 80% | ~6 kg | ~4.9 h | R6,599 (EcoFlow ZA) |
| Jackery Explorer 500 | 518 Wh | 500 W (1000 W surge) | Not for UPS use | Li-ion NMC, ≥500 to 80% | 6.04 kg | ~4.9 h | R6,999 (Jackery SA) |
| EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro | 768 Wh | 800 W (1600 W X-Boost) | <30 ms | LFP, 3000 to 80% | 7.8 kg | ~7.3 h | R10,399 (EcoFlow ZA) |
| Gizzu Hero Max (with app) | 1024 Wh | 1000 W (1200 W peak) | Built-in UPS | See below | 11.5 kg | ~9.8 h | R10,999 (Gizzu) |
EcoFlow RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS)
245 Wh LiFePO4 battery rated for 3000 cycles to 80%, one AC outlet with 300 W output (600 W surge and X-Boost), a 100 W USB-C port, two USB-A ports and a car outlet, 3.55 kg, and a quoted noise level under 30 dB, according to EcoFlow South Africa. It recharges from the wall in about 60 minutes, per EcoFlow. The 100 W USB-C port can charge most USB-C laptops directly. EcoFlow sells two versions: the UPS version (<10 ms, R5,399) and the standard RIVER 3 (<20 ms, R5,199). With only one AC outlet and 245 Wh, it suits a router, ONT and laptop through a typical outage rather than a whole desk for a day.
Price: R5,399 (UPS version) or R5,199 (standard) at EcoFlow ZA (checked 24 Oct 2026). EcoFlow notes the older RIVER 2 is out of stock and points buyers to the RIVER 3.
EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max
512 Wh LFP battery (80%+ capacity after 3000 cycles), 500 W pure sine wave AC output (1000 W surge), a 100 W USB-C port, USB-A and 12 V outputs, about 6 kg, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app control, and a 30 ms switch-over mode, per EcoFlow ZA. Twice the capacity of the RIVER 3 for about R1,200 more, which is the difference between a couple of hours and most of a workday for a light desk setup.
Price: R6,599 at EcoFlow ZA (checked 24 Oct 2026).
Jackery Explorer 500
518 Wh lithium-ion (NMC) battery rated for at least 500 cycles to 80%, 500 W pure sine wave AC output (1000 W surge), 6.04 kg and a 2-year warranty, according to Jackery South Africa. Similar capacity to the RIVER 2 Max, but Jackery SA says it should not be used as a UPS or left permanently on and connected, and its cycle rating is much lower than the LiFePO4 units. Better suited to occasional use than daily outages.
Price: R6,999 at Jackery SA (listed down from R10,999; checked 24 Oct 2026).
EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro
768 Wh LFP battery, 800 W AC output with X-Boost to 1600 W, 7.8 kg, a <30 ms EPS auto-switch and a 0–100% recharge in about 70 minutes, per EcoFlow ZA. Enough headroom for a laptop, an external monitor and the router together for most of a day.
Price: R10,399 at EcoFlow ZA (checked 24 Oct 2026).
Gizzu Hero Max 1024Wh/1000W (with app)
1024 Wh capacity, 1000 W continuous AC output (1200 W peak), a 100 W and a 20 W USB-C port, two USB-A ports, a car socket, built-in UPS function, app control, 11.5 kg and a 24-month warranty, per Gizzu. Gizzu's listing for this app version does not state the battery chemistry or switch-over time; the original Hero Max (GPS1000U) is listed as LiFePO4 with a 10 ms UPS switch-over, but that model was out of stock at R8,999 when we checked. The most capacity in this guide, but also the heaviest.
Price: R10,999 at Gizzu (in stock, checked 24 Oct 2026).
Safety notes
- Do not connect a power station to your home wiring yourself. A transfer switch must be installed by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC).
- Follow each manufacturer's guidance on leaving a unit plugged in permanently – Jackery SA specifically warns against this for the Explorer 500.
