Best power station under R10,000 in South Africa (2026)
We have not tested these units ourselves. This guide uses only the manufacturers' South African stores (EcoFlow ZA and Jackery SA): their spec tables, prices, FAQs and warranty pages on the date above. Where we work something out ourselves, such as runtimes or rand per watt-hour, we show the sum and say so.
Quick answer
- Best overall under R10,000: EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max (R6,599). 512 Wh of LFP (LiFePO4) battery rated for 3000 cycles, 500 W output, a 30 ms switch-over mode for home backup and a 5-year warranty from EcoFlow ZA. It had the lowest price per watt-hour of the units we checked.
- Same capacity, different trade-offs: Jackery Explorer 500 (R6,999). 518 Wh and 500 W, but rated for ≥500 cycles, a 2-year warranty, and Jackery SA says it should not be used as a UPS.
- Smallest UPS for Wi-Fi: EcoFlow RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS) at R5,399. Only 245 Wh, but it switches over in 10 ms, runs under 30 dB, and is LFP rated for 3000 cycles.
- Cheapest: Jackery Explorer 250 (R3,399). 257 Wh and 200 W. Enough for Wi-Fi and phones, not for a TV setup, and again not for UPS use.

Rand per watt-hour
A simple way to compare value is price divided by capacity. This is our calculation from the listed prices and capacities above:
RIVER 2 Max: R6,599 ÷ 512 Wh ≈ R12.89/Wh · Explorer 250: R3,399 ÷ 257 Wh ≈ R13.23/Wh · Explorer 500: R6,999 ÷ 518 Wh ≈ R13.51/Wh · RIVER 3: R5,199 ÷ 245 Wh ≈ R21.22/Wh (UPS version R22.04/Wh)
The RIVER 3 costs more per Wh, but you are paying for the 10 ms UPS, fast charging and the small, quiet body. Rated cycle life matters too: the two EcoFlow units are rated for 3000 cycles and the two Jackery units for ≥500.
Runtime estimates for common load-shedding setups
These are our estimates, not manufacturer claims or test results. We use the 0.85 factor from Jackery SA's own runtime formula (“Working time = 257Wh* 0.85 / operating power of your device”, on its Explorer 250 page) to allow for inverter losses, and apply it to all four units so the comparison is fair. EcoFlow does not publish a factor.
Runtime ≈ capacity (Wh) × 0.85 ÷ total watts of everything running at once.
| Example load (your watts will differ) | RIVER 2 Max | Explorer 500 | RIVER 3 | Explorer 250 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Router + fibre ONT, 24 W | ~18 h | ~18 h | ~8.7 h | ~9.1 h |
| Home office: laptop, monitor, router, ONT, 120 W | ~3.6 h | ~3.7 h | ~1.7 h | ~1.8 h |
| TV, decoder, router and LED lights, 200 W | ~2.2 h | ~2.2 h | ~1.0 h | At its 200 W limit; not recommended |
| Kettle or heater over 1000 W | None of these units: all are rated well below that | |||
For comparison, Jackery SA's own figures are 14 hours of “Fibre & WiFi” for the Explorer 500 and 7+ hours for the Explorer 250, both based on a 30 W router setup.
In short: for a 2 to 4 hour load-shedding slot, the ~500 Wh units cover Wi-Fi plus a laptop, or a TV setup. The ~250 Wh units are really for Wi-Fi, phones and lights.

EcoFlow RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS) – small UPS for Wi-Fi and a laptop
245 Wh LiFePO4 battery rated for 3000 cycles to 80%, one AC outlet at 300 W (600 W surge and X-Boost), one 100 W USB-C port, two USB-A ports, 0–100% in 60 minutes from the wall, 110 W solar input, under 30 dB at 0.5 m (EcoFlow lab figure), IP54 battery protection and 3.55 kg, according to EcoFlow ZA. The UPS version switches over in 10 ms; EcoFlow notes the standard RIVER 3 is under 20 ms. With only one AC outlet you may need a multi-plug for a router and ONT on separate adaptors.
Price: R5,399 for the 10 ms UPS version and R5,199 for the standard RIVER 3 at EcoFlow ZA (regular R5,599 and R5,399; checked 26 Oct 2026).
Jackery Explorer 250 – cheapest option
257 Wh Li-ion NMC battery rated for ≥500 cycles to 85%, 230 V pure sine wave AC output (200 W continuous, 400 W surge peak), two USB-A ports, a 12 V output, about 4 hours to recharge from the wall, 42 W DC/solar input, 3.1 kg and a 2-year warranty, according to Jackery SA. Like the Explorer 500, Jackery SA says it should not be used as a UPS or left permanently on and connected.
Price: R3,399 at Jackery SA (was R5,000; checked 26 Oct 2026). Open-box Grade A: R3,059.
Just over budget
The EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro was R10,399 at EcoFlow ZA on 26 October 2026 (regular R11,199). If you need more than about 500 Wh, or you want something closer to a home-office runtime, see our home office guide and our DELTA 2 vs Explorer 1000 Pro comparison.
Other SA retailers
Takealot and other stores also list some of these units, but we could not load Takealot's pages to check prices today, so we are not quoting any. If you buy elsewhere, check for the SA plug and a local warranty.
Verdict
If you can spend about R6,600, the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max is the strongest buy on paper: the lowest rand per Wh of the four, six times the rated cycles of the Jackery Explorer 500, a stated 30 ms switch-over for keeping things running during load-shedding, and a 5-year warranty. If you only need to keep the Wi-Fi up without a blip, the RIVER 3 (10 ms UPS) is the smaller, cheaper way to do it. Choose the Jackery Explorer 500 or 250 if you want them for camping or charging gear rather than as an always-plugged-in backup, since Jackery SA says not to use them as a UPS.
Safety notes
- Never connect a power station's output to your home wiring yourself. Jackery SA says not to connect its output sockets to mains power. Any transfer switch must be installed by a registered electrician, who will issue a Certificate of Compliance (CoC).
- Stay within the rated output. Both Jackery units shut off once you go over their rating.
