Best portable power station for camping and overlanding in South Africa (2026)
We have not taken these units camping ourselves. This guide uses only the manufacturers' South African stores (EcoFlow ZA and Jackery SA): their spec tables, prices, FAQs and warranty pages on the date above. Where we work something out ourselves, such as runtimes, charging times from a car or rand per watt-hour, we show the sum and say so.
Quick answer
- Best for weekend camping: EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max (R6,599). 512 Wh LFP (LiFePO4) battery, about 6 kg, a 12/24 V car charging input, a 126 W 12 V car-socket output for a camping fridge, 220 W solar input and a 5-year warranty from EcoFlow ZA.
- Best for longer overland trips: EcoFlow DELTA 2 (R16,499). Twice the capacity (1024 Wh), 500 W solar input, 1800 W AC output, an optional extra battery and compatibility with EcoFlow's Alternator Charger Plus 1000 for fast charging while you drive. It weighs 12 kg.
- Most solar input: Jackery Explorer 1000 Pro (R17,999). Up to 800 W of solar through two MPPT inputs and two car charging inputs, with a stated operating range of −10 to 40 °C. It is rated for ≥1000 cycles and has a 2-year warranty from Jackery SA.
- Lighter Jackery option: Explorer 500 (R6,999). 518 Wh and 6.04 kg, but only 100 W solar input, ≥500 rated cycles and a 2-year warranty.
What matters for camping and overlanding
- Charging on the move. Every unit here can charge from a vehicle's 12 V socket, but at around 100 W that is slow (see the sums below). For a bigger unit on a long trip, look at solar input and, for EcoFlow, the alternator charger.
- A 12 V output for a camping fridge. Running a 12 V compressor fridge from the DC car-socket output avoids converting to 230 V AC and back. All four units list a 12 V output.
- Weight. Around 6 kg for the ~500 Wh units and 11.5 to 12 kg for the ~1 kWh units.
- Temperature. A closed vehicle in a South African summer can get hot. Check the maker's operating range, listed in the table, and keep the unit shaded and ventilated.

How long does charging from the car take?
Jackery SA gives its own figures: the Explorer 500 recharges “from a car port within 12 hours”, and the Explorer 1000 Pro in 5.4 to 10 hours using its car port cable (one cable is in the box; it has two car inputs). EcoFlow does not give a car charging time for these two units, so this is our calculation of the best case, ignoring charging losses:
RIVER 2 Max: 512 Wh ÷ 100 W ≈ 5.1 hours or more · DELTA 2 on a 12 V socket: 12 V × 8 A ≈ 96 W, so 1024 Wh ÷ 96 W ≈ 10.7 hours or more (about half that on a 24 V truck socket)
In practice that means a day's driving will refill a ~500 Wh unit, but a ~1 kWh unit will probably not be full from the car socket alone. Solar or an alternator charger closes the gap.
EcoFlow Alternator Charger Plus 1000 (for serious overlanders)
EcoFlow ZA lists the Alternator Charger Plus 1000 at R6,799, or R20,999 bundled with a DELTA 2 (regular R22,199). Both were marked sold out on 29 October 2026. EcoFlow ZA says it charges “1kWh in 1 hour” while you drive, also works as a car battery maintainer and jump starter, and supports up to 1000 W combined alternator and solar input (the solar input cable is sold separately). It is recommended for the DELTA 2 and DELTA 3 Plus; EcoFlow ZA says power stations without an XT150 extra-battery port are not directly compatible, so it does not suit the RIVER 2 Max. It wires into the vehicle's electrical system, so have it fitted by an auto electrician.
Runtime estimates for camping loads
These are our estimates, not manufacturer claims or test results. We use the 0.85 factor from Jackery SA's own runtime formula (on its Explorer 500 page) to allow for losses, and apply it to all four units. The example loads are examples only; check the average draw of your own fridge and gear, since a compressor fridge cycles on and off and its average depends on the weather and how often you open it.
Runtime ≈ capacity (Wh) × 0.85 ÷ average watts.
| Example average load | RIVER 2 Max | DELTA 2 | Explorer 1000 Pro | Explorer 500 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Camp lights and phone charging, 20 W | ~22 h | ~44 h | ~43 h | ~22 h |
| 12 V camping fridge averaging 40 W | ~11 h | ~22 h | ~21 h | ~11 h |
| Fridge 40 W plus lights and phones 20 W | ~7 h | ~15 h | ~14 h | ~7 h |
For comparison, Jackery SA lists “Mini Fridge – 8+ hr” for the Explorer 500 and “17+ hr” for the Explorer 1000 Pro. The takeaway: a ~500 Wh unit can carry a fridge overnight but needs topping up every day, while a ~1 kWh unit gives roughly a day of fridge use plus extras before it needs charging.
Rand per watt-hour
Our calculation from the listed prices and capacities:
RIVER 2 Max: R6,599 ÷ 512 Wh ≈ R12.89/Wh · Explorer 500: R6,999 ÷ 518 Wh ≈ R13.51/Wh · DELTA 2: R16,499 ÷ 1024 Wh ≈ R16.11/Wh · Explorer 1000 Pro: R17,999 ÷ 1002 Wh ≈ R17.96/Wh

Worth knowing
- The EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro (South African plug) was listed at R10,399 but marked sold out at EcoFlow ZA on 29 October 2026, so we left it out.
- We could not load Takealot's pages to check prices today, so we are not quoting any. If you buy elsewhere, check for the SA plug and a local warranty.
Verdict
For weekends away with a fridge, lights and phones, the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max is the strongest buy on paper: the lowest rand per Wh here, LFP cells rated for 3000 cycles, a 5-year warranty and about 6 kg. For week-long overland trips, a ~1 kWh unit makes more sense. Pick the DELTA 2 if you want the longer warranty, more AC output and the option of an alternator charger, or the Jackery Explorer 1000 Pro if you plan to rely on a lot of solar (800 W input) and like its stated −10 °C operating range for cold desert nights.
Safety notes
- Do not leave a power station in direct sun or a closed, hot vehicle, and stay inside the maker's charging temperature range.
- Secure the unit while driving; at 6 to 12 kg it should be strapped down.
- Any wiring into the vehicle, such as an alternator charger or Anderson plug, should be done by an auto electrician.
